The Neapolitan Mastiff is a giant, heavy, loose-skinned molosser with a massive head, deep wrinkles, and a short coat. The body is rectangular and the movement is rolling rather than light.

A massive, short-coated guardian for a cool house and yard; little coat work, a deep quiet voice, and size that does not belong in a flat.

The Neapolitan Mastiff, or Mastino Napoletano, is an Italian guardian mastiff from the Naples region. The wrinkles and loose skin were part of the old catching-dog type. The AKC places it in the Working Group; the UKC classes it as a Guardian Dog.

Temperament

This is a territorial, serious guardian. It is typically devoted to its own household and suspicious of strangers. It is too large and too protective for a first-time owner or a small, busy street.

Training

Socialize early and keep the rules clear. A Neo that is allowed to make its own decisions about visitors becomes a liability.

Care and grooming

Wipe the short coat and keep the wrinkles clean and dry. Grow this giant slowly and keep adults lean.

Low to moderate.

Health

Neapolitan Mastiffs may develop hip dysplasia, cherry eye, skin-fold infections, and bloat. Do not exercise hard right after meals.
