The Brussels Griffon is a small, square toy dog with a nearly human expression, a short turned-up muzzle, and either a harsh wire coat or a smooth coat (Petit Brabancon). The eyes are large and dark.

A small companion who fits an apartment; wiry or smooth coat care, a big personality, and a voice that will comment on the hallway.

The Brussels Griffon was developed in Brussels as a stable and coach dog, then as a companion. The rough-coated Griffon Bruxellois and the smooth Petit Brabancon are varieties of the same breed in many registries. The AKC places it in the Toy Group; the UKC classes it as a Companion Dog.

Temperament

These little dogs are typically confident, sensitive, and closely tied to one or two people. They can be jealous and do not always enjoy rough play from small children. They notice everything and will comment on it.

Training

They learn quickly and remember unfair handling. Keep sessions short and socialize them while they are young.

Care and grooming

Rough coats need stripping or clipping; smooth coats need only a wipe. Keep the face clean, especially around the prominent eyes.

Shedding

Low on the rough coat; low to moderate on the smooth coat.

Health

Brussels Griffons may develop patellar luxation, eye injuries, and the breathing trouble common to short-muzzled dogs. Protect the eyes and avoid heat.
